Borris-Ileigh V Annacarthy

On Sunday last our senior team bridged a 25 year gap to qualify for the county semi final with a composed win over west champions Éire Óg Annacarthy. There was added sweetness to the victory as it was the men from the west who ended our interest in the 2012 championship in rather disappointing fashion. The second game of the double header in The Ragg threw in at 3:30pm with Borris facing into half an hour of playing into a gale force wind blowing straight down the field. The opening minutes looked better for Annacarthy as they raced into 3 points to no score lead. However a long ball into Conor Kenny at full forward proved just the tonic for Borris as a green flag was raised for a well taken goal. Éire Óg chipped in with a few 2 more points before another long ball in caused trouble, this time Keith Ryan reacting quickest to pull on the ball and found the corner of the net. Brendan Maher was able to keep Borris in touch as well throughout the half with 3 well taken frees and left the half time score of 0-10 to 2-03. A 1 point margin was a poor return for Annacarthy after having a massive wind advantage for the half but was also testament to the huge work rate shown by Borris who never gave an opponent time on the ball. Borris would not make the same mistake as Annacarthy and rattled off 7 unanswered points in the opening 10 minutes of the second half with scores coming from Dan McCormack, Vincent Stapleton and Brendan Maher. Annacarthy rallied somewhat in the middle section of the game when the bagged 1-1 from placed balls in quick succession but it was to be their last assault on the Borris goals as further points from the stick of midfield maestro Brendan Maher saw Borris close out the game to record a 2-16 to 1-11 victory. It was a deserved victory for Borris who have now finally gotten over the quarter final hoodoo that has tormented them so since 2005. With the majority of Sunday’s team having being involved in the 5 quarter final losses it was a huge relief to make it to the last four-some players were even involved in a 6th loss back in 1997! Loughmore-Castleieny now prove the opponents in the semi final and this game shall take place in Semple Stadium at 3:30pm on Sunday 29th of September. We hope to see you there
