Borris-Ileigh V Cappawhite

Borris-Ileigh travelled to Cappawhite on Sunday afternoon for this 1st round clash and emerged comfortable victors on a scoreline of 4-17 to 1-4. Cappawhite opened the scoring with a free but it was to be the only time that they were in front for the remainder of the game as Borris responded with 2-2 in 7 minutes to open up a 7 point lead after just 10 minutes. Conor Kenny caused serious difficulty for the Cappawhite full back as he helped himself to two well taken goals after some fine team work from Brendan Maher and Keith Ryan.
It went from bad to worse for Cappawhite, despite 2 frees, as further points from Keith Ryan and Kieran Maher and a goal from centre forward David O Connor made it 3-5 to 0-3 with just 20 minutes gone. Cappwhite would fail to score for the remainder of the half as Borris kept the score board ticking over with a further 4 points to close the half with the score standing at the Borris-Ileigh 3-9 Cappawhite 0-3.
The second half failed to spark into any kind of life. Brendan Maher added a further 2 frees to his 3 from the first half while substitute Matthew Stapleton, who replaced Conor Kenny at half time, was quick to leave his mark slotting over a nice point. Brendan Maher added another two placed balls to his haul, 1 free and 1 65, before Cappawhite finally got their first score from play coming from Paul Fitzgerald in the 46th minute. The game was all but over as Brendan Maher was taken down and the referee called for a penalty that was duly netted by Maher. The final ten minutes petered out with David O Connor finding range to finish his game with a fine total of 1-4. Cappawhite did manage a consolation goal with 2 minutes remaining but it was far too little to late. Borris will be pleased with a good win and a solid performance. Cappawhite will have to improve greatly for any success to be seen
